ELMHURST — The United States Navy veteran who was killed during a fire at his home last week will be buried with full military honors thanks to help from Rep. Grace Meng.

Martin Devereux, 71, was one of three people killed in a fire at his home on Ithaca Street on March 21.

His cousin contacted Meng's office on Tuesday asking if she could help get a full military funeral for Devereux, a Navy vet who served in the 1960s.

The vital documents needed to document his service to qualify him for the honor were destroyed in the blaze.

“He bravely served our country and deserves this military honor for his service," Meng said in a statement.

She worked with the U.S Department of Veterans Affairs and the National Personnel Records Center to verify his military record, and confirmed on Wednesday that the Naval Honor Guard would be present at Devereux's funeral.

The funeral will be held Thursday morning at St. Bartholemew's Church, 43-22 Ithaca St.
