SOUTH STREET SEAPORT — Prolific restaurateur and chef David Chang is heading to the South Street Seaport.
Chang, of Momofuku fame, is slated to open a new restaurant on Pier 17 — a pier currently being reconstructed that will be home to a massive, multi-level, glass shopping center, with a roof deck for lounging and events.
Seaport developer Howard Hughes Corporation told its shareholders in a letter Wednesday that the company now has a lease with Chang, "who will be opening a dynamic new restaurant concept in the Pier 17 building."
No other details about the restaurant were discussed, though the New York Post reports that sources said it would a "true sit down restaurant, not a snack stand."
This is the second high-profile restaurateur to sign on to Howard Hughes's overhaul of the Seaport.
Acclaimed chef Jean-Georges Vongerichten will helm a new seafood-inspired food market at the base of Pier 17, inside a landmarked Fulton Fish Market warehouse, the Tin Building, that the Hughes company is planning to refurbish.
The plan to dismantle and reconstruct the Tin Building as a food market out from under the FDR was recently approved by the Landmarks Preservation Commission.
Chang, who will be launching a delivery-only restaurant called Ando, according to Fast Company, owns several restaurants under his Momofuku name throughout the city.
The Momofuku Group did not immediately return request for comment.
