PROSPECT-LEFFERTS GARDEN — A man was seriously injured when a fourth-floor fire escape gave way and sent him plummeting to the street Thursday night, police said.

The 23-year-old was visiting 1798 Bedford Ave., near Lefferts Boulevard, and went out on the fire escape about 11:30 p.m. when he leaned against the railing, which then broke, an NYPD spokeswoman said. The man may have been intoxicated at the time, police said.

Neighbors heard a metallic wobbling sound followed by a thud.

"I heard something hit the fire escape and I thought, 'I hope that's not a person,'" said Lauren Drake, 27, a massage therapist who lives in the apartment below.

The man suffered injuries to his head and body and was taken to Kings County Hospital, where he's listed in stable condition, police said.

It wasn't immediately clear what he was doing at the building.
