SOHO — Longtime megastore Pearl River Mart will remain open until the end of March, despite previously planning to shutter last month, its owner said.
The Chinese specialty store, located at 477 Broadway between Broadway and Broome Street, announced last year that it would close at the end of February due to a rent increase, owner Ching Yeh Chen said.
“It was planned like that, but we still have to pay the rent for the whole month [of March], so it’s not practical,” she said.
Chen, who opened the store with her husband in the 1970s, said that she's going to “try to do more sales" because the store still has many items to clear out.
The original goal of the venture was to sell “nothing but stuff from China," according to Pearl River Mart's website.
Chen said they managed to do that, with an accompanying online store accounting for only a fraction of the store’s income.
