MANHATTAN — An man killed himself by lying in front of an L train near Union Square Wednesday morning, the shaken motorman said.

The man, who police said hasn't been identified, lay in the track bed of the Third Avenue station at East 14th Street with his head pointing toward the platform as a train barreled toward him about 11:50 a.m., the MTA operator said afterwards.

"It was too late to stop. No one can survive that," said operator Marvin Milton, who has worked at the transit agency for 26 years.

Milton didn't see anyone warning him and the first two train cars ran the man over, he said.

The man was pronounced dead at the scene, FDNY and NYPD officials said.

The L train was briefly suspended, but had resumed normal service with some residual delays by 1:30 p.m., the MTA said.
