QUEENS — A woman in her 20s was rescued after she fell into an ice-covered pond in Forest Park Tuesday evening, fire and police officials said.

The woman, whose name has not been released, was walking atop the ice on the frozen Lawrence Strack Memorial Pond, located near Woodhaven Boulevard and Forest Park Drive, when the ice gave way about 5:20 p.m., officials said.

Firefighters used a ladder to remove her from the icy water, as an NYPD helicopter hovered over the pond, authorities said.

Initially, there were reports of other people, possibly children, falling into the water, prompting FDNY and NYPD divers to go into the pond and perform "a thorough search," Frank Dwyer, a spokesman for the FDNY, said in an email.

"Thankfully the search was unfounded," he noted.

The woman was transported to Jamaica Hospital in stable condition for further evaluation, according to the FDNY.

It was unclear how long she stayed in the water, fire officials said.
