STATEN ISLAND — A rookie firefighter was badly burned when he fell into the basement of a Woodrow home during a blaze that injured 10 other people Monday night, an FDNY spokesman said.
The flames erupted in the basement of 1053 Sinclair Ave., near Maguire Avenue, at 8:46 p.m. and quickly spread through the two-story home, FDNY officials said.
About 140 firefighters responded and tried to bring the fire under control, officials said.
Probational firefighter Lawrence J. Wasser, 23, of Ladder 23 who graduated from the academy in Nov., tumbled into the basement of the home through a hall in the wall, where he suffered second- and third-degree burns, the FDNY said.
He was taken to Staten Island University North Hospital, where he is listed in stable condition, officials said.
Ten other people were injured in the blaze, including three people who refused medical attention at the scene, officials said. In all, eight firefighters were injured.
The others were treated at area hospitals, according to the FDNY.
The cause of the blaze was an accidental electrical fire, the agency tweeted out.
