CORONA — The Queens International Night Market will return to Flushing Meadows-Corona Park for its second season this April, organizers announced Monday.
The festival, the first night market in the city, has maintained its local focus, showcasing the diverse food, art, merchandise and performers in Queens.
Last year's market featured more than 100 independent vendors, many of which were selling food and other items for the first time, founder John Wang said.
It kept the focus on affordable food, capping most dishes at $5 and encouraging smaller artisans to sell.
The market will open April 23 in the parking lot of the New York Hall of Science.
Wang said 2015 was stressful as two crowdfunding campaigns set to help the market survive failed to meet their goals. Still, he's determined to keep the night market alive in Queens.
“I didn’t take a single day off in twelve months, but it was worth it to see so many visitors from all over NYC and from all over the world, really," he said.
"There were more families and baby strollers every night than I could have imagined. I also love how many small business ventures we were able to encourage.”
After starting the season in the parking lot of the New York Hall of Science last year, Wang moved the market to downtown Jamaica through the fall. He also hosted a winter craft market.
Vendors can apply now, with a preference given to those that showcase the "unparalleled international and cultural diversity of Queens and New York City."
