This below-ground sushi bar and “izakaya” — a Japanese gastropub, essentially — opened this summer under the Michelin-starred Zabb Elee Thai restaurant. The tiny restaurant has delicious and inventive sushi rolls, brought out on ornate displays. There’s also fried gizzards, ramen specials and other food to line your stomach before drinking $12 pitchers of Sapporo.

Surfish Bistro has served "exceptional seafood" (according to New York Magazine) at its original Park Slope location for the past four years, but chef-owner Miguel Aguilar has been itching to expand into a bigger space. The Gowanus outpost will have two levels, two bars and enough space for about 100 diners. Aguilar is freshening up the menu with new dishes including squid ink paella and quinoa fried rice with tofu and veggies.

Local Astoria husband-and-wife Sonny and Vanessa Solomon opened this Indian eatery where the focus of the menu is on seasonal ingredients, meaning the dishes will change every few months. Sonny Solomon has worked in restaurants for years, bringing the expertise he learned managing acclaimed restaurants like Devi and Tulsi.
Zing’s Awesome Rice, 122 Ludlow St., Lower East Side

Specializing in “seared rice” dishes, Zing’s offers three types of varieties — sushi white rice, brown rice and purple rice — which are marinated before they are mixed in with various proteins, vegetables and the eatery’s “secret sauce.” The restaurant also serves a small selection of appetizers, soup and mochi ice cream.

Riverdel Cheese, 820 Washington Ave., Prospect Heights
