MANHATTAN — Some Upper Manhattan subway riders had a smoky commute Monday evening after a fire at the 181st street station, according to officials and witnesses.
The small track fire broke out at 6:11 p.m. at the 181st Street A station, causing delays and a train to be evacuated, an FDNY spokesman and witness said.
The MTA alerted passengers of service delays via Twitter.
"A train hit something on third rail just before 181," wrote one member of an Upper Manhattan Facebook group. "Train evacuated, will be problems for a while. Smoke all over."
Firefighters put out the blaze by 6:35 p.m. and there were no reported injuries, officials said.
Trains were running normally by 6:40 p.m., according to the MTA’s website.
