QUEENS — A guard was injured in an "unprovoked assault with a weapon" at Rikers Island Thursday afternoon, jail officials said.

The guard, whose identity was not immediately released, was attacked about 4:30 p.m. and treated at a hospital, according to Department of Correction spokesman Jeff Jacomowitz.

Jacomowitz reiterated that DOC Commissioner Joseph Ponte is committed to safety.

"He has zero tolerance for assaults on staff," the spokesman said. "The department is seeking re-arrest of any inmate involved."

It was not immediately clear who assaulted the officer.
