SOHO — The space where Google was reportedly going to open its first ever brick-and-mortar store is being advertised for sublease for $2.25 million a year.
Locals with long-standing gripes about the Apple store on Prince Street feared the massive Google store — more than 5,000 square feet spread across two floors — would bring the same issues, particularly light pollution, crowded sidewalks and excessive trash.
But a new listing for the "new, untouched" ground-floor and lower-level space at 131 Greene St. suggests Google has abandoned that plan.
The sublease runs through August 2024, according to the listing, with the possibility to extend the term.
A dedicated website for the space with the headline "FINALLY. WHAT EVERYONE HAS BEEN TALKING ABOUT..." features photos of the many-windowed space, with original cast-iron columns, exposed brick, and soaring ceilings.
The asking rent for the space is $2.25 million a year according to a spokesperson for Sinvin Commercial Real Estate & Advisory which is handling the listing.
