PARK SLOPE — A chef who's worked at two of Brooklyn's sandwich powerhouses is bringing his bread-and-meat pairing skills to the South Slope.
Chef Josh Sobel has joined Southside Coffee and will start serving sandwiches at the cafe Sept. 14, the owner announced Wednesday.
Sobel previously worked at the well-regarded sandwich purveyors Mile End Deli and Court Street Grocers. He'll team with Daniel Rojo, the chef at nearby Lot 2 Restaurant, to expand Southside's menu to include breakfast and lunch sandwiches.
Southside Coffee opened in 2008 at 652 Sixth Ave. near 19th Street. Until now it's served coffee and pastries, but the cafe is currently under renovation and will reopen Monday with the expanded sandwich menu.
Southside's new food offerings will include a $7 bacon, egg and cheese breakfast sandwich, a $10 Italian combo with mortadella, salami, sopressata, provolone, lettuce, onion and relish, and a $10 “Greek Salad Hoagie” with cucumber, chickpeas, lettuce, feta, olives, tomato and Greek dressing.
Southside Coffee owner Ben Jones also owns Lot 2 Restaurant on Sixth Avenue and 20th Street. His original partner in the cafe, Joshua Sidis, left the business to work for Mayor Bill de Blasio as a policy adviser, Jones said.
Though de Blasio hasn't mentioned Southside as one of his favorite dining destinations, the cafe helped feed his campaign coffers. Southside hosted a 2013 phone banking event for then-candidate de Blasio that actor and Park Slope resident Steve Buscemi attended.
