NEPONSIT — Endless summer.

Lifeguards at Riis Park Beach, which is patrolled by federal guards and not through the city's Parks Department, will stay on through Sept. 13, a week longer than the usual Labor Day close, officials said.

“We are very happy to extend swimming at Riis for one more week this year,” said Jen Nersesian, superintendent of Gateway National Recreation Area.

It is the only beach within the National Park Service that will stay open beyond the unofficial end of summer, spokeswoman Daphne Yun said.

The decision was made after the city extending its beach season a week, a move that was announced earlier this summer, she added.

Lifeguards will be at Bays 1 through 9 from 10 a.m. until 6 p.m.
