There's a reason Upper West Siders refer to their slice of Manhattan as the #bestside and believe they have the ultimate edge over East Siders: the sunsets.

The west-facing neighborhood boasts amazing sunsets, best viewed from on high or while gazing at the Hudson River, but also glimpsed from the ground while doing errands.

With summer days coming to a close — NYC public school starts Sept. 9 and there are already signs of fall — why not look back on the summer that was, through its sunsets?

After all, as one Instagram user we came across put it: "sunsets: good for your soul."

As smart locals know, Pier i offers a front-row seat for Hudson River sunset watching:

Some of the best sunset shots captured the sun just as it dipped below the New Jersey horizon:

There were some splashes of hot pink that filled the sky where the only appropriate reaction was "Woahhh":

And there were instances where the sun's fading rays magnificently caught the clouds:

A harbor dotted with boats doesn't hurt either:

And lastly, we leave you with a time-lapse sunset video, which while not technically taken on the Upper West Side, is nevertheless mesmerizing:
