HELLS KITCHEN — Check out the stars on the deck of the Intrepid this Friday.

The Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum will host Astronomy Night on Aug. 28, featuring a talk by a local astrophysicist and then the chance to gaze through powerful telescopes on the ship's deck to get a closer look at the stars.

Maryam Modjaz — who's job description is "stellar-death detective" — will speak about her work at NYU's Center for Cosmology and Particle Physics.

Modjaz investigates stellar explosions and hunts for the causes of exploding stars called supernovae and gamma-ray bursts that are super-potent flashes of electromagnetic energy that come from explosions in distant galaxies.

Following the talk, guests can venture out from the Space Shuttle Pavilion onto the ship's deck to see the stars.

Astronomy Night runs from 6:45 to 10 p.m. It's free but you have to register ahead of time here.

The Intrepid is docked in the Hudson River at Pier 86 near 46th Street.
