SOUTH BRONX — Although the city's third through eighth graders scored slightly higher on this year's state math and English exams, less than half of students passed the tests at many South Bronx schools.

About 35 percent of students met math standards citywide, and about 30 percent met English standards, up from roughly 34 and 28 percent last year, respectively, city officials said.

But the scores still show a racial gap, with black and Hispanic students making smaller gains.

The tests are aligned to Common Core standards, which Mayor Bill de Blasio described as among the highest in the nation.
