LOWER EAST SIDE — The New York International Fringe Festival returns next week with performances by more than 185 emerging theater troupes and dance companies from around the world.
This year’s lineup of 200 shows includes a “hip-hopera” based on Shakespeare’s “Hamlet,” a spoken-word piece about “coming out” as a Trekkie, and an adaption of David Foster Wallace’s “A Supposedly Fun Thing I’ll Never Do Again," according to the event’s program guide.
Performances will predominantly take place at more than a dozen venues on the Lower East Side and Greenwich Village from Aug. 14 through 30.
The festival, now in its 19th year, features productions that cover a wide range of topics and genres, including drama, comedy and satire. This year’s participants hail from 21 states and eight countries, according to FringeNYC.
The festival will also offer a selection of family-friendly musicals, puppet shows and plays through its FringeJR events.
