RED HOOK — A 77-year-old oil tanker in Red Hook will welcome visitors for a weekend of music, food, drink and tours next month.

PortSide NewYork's Mary A. Whalen will host free summer performances and events Aug 7, 8 and 9 at Mary A. Whalen, the organization announced.

This is the first time PortSide will hold open public programming aboard the vessel after the group moved Mary A. Whalen to Atlantic Basin in May, the nonprofit's president Carolina Salguero said. They've previously hosted mainly invite-only events with board members and educators.

The weekend event will include nighttime performances by two Swiss musicians on flute and guitar, day tours of the historic tanker and "TankerTime," which takes place on Aug. 8 and 9 between 6 and 10 p.m. and gives visitors a chance to bring snacks, take-out or a bottle of wine and spend the evening on the boat.

"She's a historic object," Salguero said. "But she's also a floating cultural center."

Attendees can learn more about Mary A. Whalen's history during tours on Aug. 8 and 9 between noon and 5 p.m. Sign ups will be available at Pioneer Works, located on Pioneer near Van Brunt streets.

Folk Music NY will be performed on the evening of Aug. 8 and there will be a community potluck dinner the next night. PortSide NewYork will not be serving food or drink separately.
