CROWN HEIGHTS — Get ready for some free mid-summer music, Crown Heights.

Doug E. Fresh, Kurtis Blow and Special Ed will headline the Wingate Park Martin Luther King Jr. Concert Series this year, organizers announced this week, which starts with funk rock band Morris Day and The Time on Monday.

The free music event has been held at the park every summer for more than three decades, organizers said, bringing weekly concerts to local residents of Wingate, the neighborhood on the border of Crown Heights and East Flatbush.

This year, organizers created three theme nights. After the Morris Day concert on July 27, the second week will feature all gospel performers: Ricky Dillard and New G, Mike Willis & The Called and the Christian Cultural Center Choir from East New York on Aug. 3.

Week three will feature reggae performers only, including Freddie McGregor, Christopher Martin and the group New Kingston on Aug. 10.

And the last performance of the summer will be “Old School Night,” featuring original hip-artists Doug E. Fresh, Kurtis Blow and Special Ed on Aug. 17.

Though the event is free and open to the public, attendees are encouraged to bring their own chairs and are reminded that seating is on a first come, first served basis.
