BRONX — A colony of the world's tiniest penguins debuted at The Bronx Zoo Wednesday.
The 24 little blue penguins, named after their appearance, arrived at the Bronx Zoo from Sydney, Australia. It will be the first time the zoo has exhibited this particular species, a spokesman for the Wildlife Conservation Society said.
The birds, also known as fairy penguins, can be seen waddling and splashing in the zoo's Aquatic Bird House. They're all adults, each about 13 inches tall and two to three pounds.
Little penguins are the smallest of 18 penguin species and are native to coastal southern Australia and New Zealand.
Only three other facilities nationwide currently have little blue penguins, according to the Bronx Zoo press release.
