MANHATTAN — MetroCard machines malfunctioned throughout the city for Monday's rush-hour commute, informing frustrated customers that credit and debit card transactions couldn't be performed, the MTA said.
An MTA spokeswoman said only about 100 machines were affected and that the problem originated with Verizon, which handles those transactions.
About 50 of the machines returned to normal service by about 1 p.m., a spokeswoman said.
Crews are working to fix the issue, but it wasn't immediately clear what caused the problem or when all the machines would be back up and running, the MTA said.
Riders griped on social media.
