CHELSEA — The 24-hour Donut Pub has been cranking out 60 dozen doughnuts a day for the past 50 years, and to celebrate the tradition, it's adding a new "golden donut" to its menu.

The 203 W. 14th St. bakery is celebrating its 50th anniversary by offering a new doughnut with a saffron-colored vanilla glaze for $1.10 each.

The Donut Pub also has its usual Boston cremes, blueberry cake and vanilla jelly doughnuts even though the atmosphere and clientele have changed a little over the years, said Gus Merkatos, 37, who's been working at The Donut Pub since he was in high school.

"There used to be smoking [behind the counter],and everyone used to come — all kinds of crazies," Merkatos said. “Now you walk down the block, it’s Duane Reade, Citibank, Rite Aid, Duane Reade."

Buzzy Geduld, who reportedly retired from finance after selling his brokerage firm for nearly a billion dollars 15 years ago, started the pub in 1964, according to the shop's website.

The eatery's unique taste and whole wheat doughnut option are just some of the draws for long-time customer Frank Martin, 68, who's been going to The Donut Pub at least twice a week for the past 30 years.

"They cook everything here every day," Martin said. "I go for the health food."
