Beagle Recovering at Forest Hills Clinic After Being Rescued From Fire

QUEENS — A beagle was recovering in intensive care Wednesday after being rescued from a fire that broke out in Queens Tuesday morning, a clinic said.

Duke, who was taken to BluePearl Veterinary Partners in Forest Hills, inhaled a lot of carbon monoxide during the fire and will need to be treated with oxygen for another 24 to 48 hours in a special glass cage with high oxygen levels, the clinic said Wednesday.

"Duke is stable," said Paul Miranda, the practice manager at BluePearl. "We’ve had him in an oxygen chamber since he came in yesterday."

The animal did not appear to be burned during the fire, the clinic said.

The clinic did not have information about the location and time of the fire and fire officials could not confirm the details of the incident.

The dog, who is turning two later this month, was home alone when the fire broke out. Firefighters were not able to immediately locate the owners, and gave the dog to NYPD investigators, who took Duke to the clinic.

"He is going be with us probably for another few days," Miranda said.

Frankie's Friends, a nonprofit focused on saving pets, set up a page to help the owners with the cost of treatment.

"His family lost [al]most everything they had in the blaze," the organization wrote on the page. "If it weren't for the quick actions of two NYPD detectives who brought Duke to BluePearl Veterinary Partners in Queens, the little guy may not be doing as well as he is today."

As of Wednesday afternoon, the site has raised more than $1,300 of a $6,000 goal.
