MANHATTAN — A man was fatally struck by an L train in the First Avenue subway station Thursday afternoon, officials said.
The Brooklyn-bound train was barreling into the station at 14th Street when it hit the man, whose identity was not immediately released, at 12:46 p.m., witnesses and officials said.
The conductor slammed on the brakes and brought the train to a halt, witnesses and officials said.
"I'm still shaking. I think this is very sad. I can't believe this happened," said Artur Smieciuch, 32, who was heading home to Greenpoint when he saw the man get hit.
The man appeared to intentionally jump into the path of the train, witnesses said.
He was pronounced dead, officials said.
Trains along the L line were briefly suspended after the incident but resumed regular service with some delays, the MTA said.
