BROOKLYN — A man was shot and killed just steps from his home in Crown Heights Thursday afternoon, police said.

Jaquay Bennett, 19, was shot twice in the torso and again in the leg outside 769 St. Marks Ave., near New York Avenue, about 5:30 p.m., according to the NYPD.

Bennett, who lived on the same block, was pronounced dead at Kings County Hospital, police said.

On Friday afternoon, dozens of people gathered on the corner where he was shot, setting out candles and flowers to commemorate Bennett's life.

Gospel music played from a car nearby as one woman tied white balloons around a light post on the corner or St. Marks and New York avenues where other mourners had left red heart-shaped balloons, a package of Famous Amos cookies, a votive candle and a bouquet of lilies.

Officers in two NYPD vehicles parked on the opposite corner from the vigil kept watch over the crowd.

The man's killer had not been arrested as of Friday morning, police said.
