RED HOOK — A Lower East Side art gallery is making its first big expansion in New York to Red Hook next year.

Brennan & Griffin, located at 55 Delancey St., has leased a 5,000-square-foot building, an adjacent 4,000-square-foot yard and driveway at 62 Delevan St. in Red Hook, co-owner James Griffin said.

The expansion was first reported by ARTnews.

The contemporary gallery is planning to debut the space in May 2015 with an exhibition by artist Mary Weatherford.

Brennan & Griffin will maintain its Lower East Side gallery but plans to host four exhibitions in the Red Hook space next year.

Griffin, who lives in Red Hook, said he has spent several years searching for a larger space for the gallery.

While the gallery had been primarily looking around the Lower East Side, Red Hook’s growing artistic community drew him to the neighborhood.

“There are several interesting art spaces and many prominent artists live and have studios in the area, so it felt like the appropriate time and place for this sort of venue,” Griffin told DNAinfo New York in an email.

“[T]here is a romance and history to the neighborhood.”
