GOVERNORS ISLAND — A pavilion made of aluminum pipes and strands of rope braided from 38,000 reused plastic bags could soon be on its way to Governors Island.
The FIGMENT arts festival recently announced the five finalists in its design competition for the City of Dreams Pavilion, which will give one team of young architects a chance to build a fanciful, eco-friendly interactive space on Governors Island in 2015.
All the designers found whimsical ways to use recycled or low-impact materials for the temporary pavilions, which are set to be on display for Governors Island's summer season, from June through September.
Architects from Hou De Sousa hope to use thousands of braided plastic bags to build their creation, while designer duo Megazoo would use recycled paper to form a massive canopy.
The goal is to find a creative design that encourages visitors to the island to relax, interact and enjoy public art, according to FIGMENT.
A jury of local engineers and architects will announce a winner in December.
This will be FIGMENT's fifth City of Dreams Pavilion on Governors Island. Previous winners include last season's Governor's Cup, an interlaced sculpture made from recycled plastic cups, designed by architecture firm CDR.
