WASHINGTON HEIGHTS — A smoldering tranformer in the 181st Street subway station Friday afternoon sent smoke clouds into the station and temporarily halted service temporarily on the A and C lines, fire and MTA officials said.
Firefighters were called to the station about 2:15 p.m. and found the smoking track equipment, according to fire officials.
"The incident DID NOT involve a train and as per FDNY, there is no indication of any kind of explosion," MTA spokesman Kevin Ortiz wrote in an email.
Commuters took to social media to report about acrid smoke in the station, located at 181st Street and Fort Washington Avenue.
A Youtube video of the incident shows the train halted in a cloudy station while commuters linger patiently on the platform and on the train.
Northbound service on the A and C line was halted at 145th Street and all service between the Inwood-207th Street station and 145th Street were temporarily stopped, the MTA spokesman said.
