RED HOOK — How can you improve your neighborhood with $2 million?
That's the question City Councilman Carlos Menchaca is asking residents of Red Hook and Sunset Park, as he launched his participatory budgeting program for District 38 this week.
Menchaca has set aside $2 million in taxpayer money for capital improvement projects that will be proposed and voted on by local residents, he announced.
Last year, the district, which also includes South Slope, Greenwood Heights and a portion of Borough Park, hosted its first participatory budgeting program and was able to fund the revamping a community garden behind Red Hook's public library and upgrades to electrical wiring systems at local schools.
Those interested in sharing possible projects in the district can attend one of a few neighborhood assemblies this month or post their ideas online.
The next meeting will be held on Nov. 5 at P.S. 15 in Red Hook, located at 71 Sullivan St., from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. A full list of upcoming meetings can be found here.
