ELMHURST — A new meditation space will hold an open house next month to introduce its form of “mind-clearing” to the neighborhood.

Maum Meditation opened its third Queens location two months ago on the first floor of 40-28 82nd St. in Jackson Heights. The other centers are in Flushing and Bayside.

Maum, which was created by Woo Myung in South Korea, is a seven-level method to clear your mind and “subtract” the things that can clutter our heads.

Evan Schwam, 35, is a volunteer at the center and has been practicing Maum Meditation since 2005. He felt an immediate change once he started at the center’s Flushing location, he said.

“My mind just seemed lighter, as light as a feather,” he said. His relationship with his family changed, and his “programmed reactions” to stressful situations were completely altered, he said.

The specific kind of meditation doesn’t just try to “quiet the mind,” he said, but tries to “take out the noise.”

Sessions at the Jackson Heights location are held in English and Spanish every day from 8 a.m. until 8 p.m., he said.

Memberships begin at $150 per month for unlimited classes, without a contract. Year memberships are $130 a month and a two-year contracts costs $100 each month.

The open house on Oct. 11 begins at 2 p.m. and requires an RSVP on the center’s website.
