On Monday, the fall session begins for students of the National Academy School. The Academy offers dozens of classes in every artistic discipline, including painting, drawing, sculpture, new media, printmaking and mixed media. Japanese-born, New York-based master printer Taka Maruno’s “Learning the Techniques of Printmaking” class is especially suited for beginners. It offers an introduction to the basics of printmaking by exploring five distinct processes: monotype, linoleum-relief printing, collagraphy, paper lithography (or xerox transfer), and drypoint. Christian Frederick Martin, founder of the great American guitar firm C. F. Martin & Co., was the son of a cabinetmaker. Martin learned to build instruments from a Viennese master, but due to restrictive guilds in Germany, he moved to the United States in 1833, eventually settling in Nazareth, Pennsylvania. There, Martin first encountered the Spanish guitar and incorporated elements from that tradition into his own style of instrument construction. The result was a new form of the guitar. "Early American Guitars - The Instruments of C. F. Martin" at the Metropolitan Museum includes 35 instruments from the Martin Museum in Nazareth and runs through Dec. 7. 10:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., 1000 Fifth Ave. (at 82nd Street), Upper East Side. $25

Meet members of the NYC Audubon crew for a Morning Fall Migration Walk in Central Park on Wednesday, observing the diverse and ever-changing waves of migrant birds that stop over during fall migration. Thursday, Sept. 11
Just opened is the Floating Library, a pop-up, mobile device-free public space on a boat. The Lilac Museum Steamship’s main deck has been transformed into an outdoor reading lounge and will also feature ongoing art installations. The ship was previously a U.S. Coast Guard vessel built in 1933 to carry supplies to lighthouses. Hudson River Park’s Pier 25 (at West and N. Moore streets), TriBeCa. Open 4 to 7 p.m. on Thursdays and 2 to 7 p.m. on weekends, through to Oct. 3. Free.
