EAST HARLEM — Police officers rescued a 9-day-old boy accidentally locked inside a car by his mother at the East River Mall Tuesday night.
The mother was placing groceries in her car on the second-floor of the parking garage when the door unexpectedly closed with her keys in the ignition around 7:30 p.m., police said.
Officers from the 25th Precinct arrived at the mall and used a department-issued hammer to break into the front-passenger window of the car, the NYPD said.
The baby was unharmed, but was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital as a precaution after being exposed to 80 degree temperatures while trapped, police said.
The mother was not charged with a crime.
