COBBLE HILL — The silver screen is going green.
Cobble Hill Cinemas, the decades-old indie movie house at 265 Court St., will soon be screening films with a little help from solar energy.
The theater is investing in solar panels that will cover more than 4,000 square feet of the building's roof at Court and Baltic Streets, said owner Harvey Elgart.
The city's Department of Buildings issued permits to install the panels back in July. Fiveboro Solar LLC, a business based in Prospect Heights that specializes in using the sun's energy to generate electricity, will take on the project, according to city records.
Records show that the three-story building was constructed around 1930 and occupies more than 10,000 square feet.
The solar power will supplement the building's energy use, contributing to a main electrical source that will power its five screens and digital projection, Elgart explained.
"We have always tried to be energy efficient," he said.
The theater has already switched its bulbs to more environmentally friendly alternatives like CPL, and now LED, Elgart added.
The panels should be operational in about six weeks, he said.
