QUEENS — The borough's longest-serving community board district manager will retire this year after holding her post for more than three decades, the board announced Monday.
Mary Ann Carey started her career at Community Board 9, which represents Kew Gardens, Richmond Hill, Woodhaven and Ozone Park, when Ed Koch was mayor, the board wrote in an email.
“I have overseen many projects too numerous to mention here and worked with four Borough Presidents, dozens of legislators, commissioners, District Managers and their staff," Carey wrote in her resignation letter which she had sent to CB9 earlier this month.
"In my thirty-five years of service to this great city with very [few] exceptions, I loved every minute," she added.
Last year, she was placed on probation after some members of CB9 accused her of incompetence and mismanaging the office, including failing to address requests in a timely manner.
Carey also had numerous supporters. In a statement issued on Monday, CB9 chairman Ralph Gonzalez called Carey "a valuable asset to CB9" and said that “it's difficult to imagine anyone truly filling her shoes.”
"She can be proud of the legacy she's leaving at Community Board 9,” Gonzalez noted.
According to the statement, Carey will retire on Oct. 1.
The board said in the email it would begin searching for a new district manager after its next meeting in September.
