SOUTH WILLIAMSBURG — Lovers of fresh-pressed juice will be able to drink their veggie-and-fruit elixirs for free at a surf-themed South Fourth Street shop on Thursday.

Summers Juice and Coffee, 155 South Fourth St., is celebrating its first birthday Thursday by offering a free, 12-ounce custom juice made from four different ingredients, with choices including spinach, kale, pineapple and grapefruit.

The cost is usually $5, and the company's building management, J Wasser Management Company, is sponsoring the free juices for the day, said Chris Taha, owner of Summers.

"We’re just trying to treat our regular customers and some newbies that might want to give us a try," Taha said.

Taha and Summers co-owner Alex Kleinberg met while surfing in the Rockaways, hence the "surf vibe" of the shop, Taha said. The two friends, both with backgrounds in the food industry, started brainstorming business ideas while surfing in Nicaragua a while back and zeroed in on juice.

The name is inspired by "their favorite season of the year," Taha said.

"The whole environment is a representation of us and who we are," he said.

Summers is open on Thursday from 7:30 a.m. to 8 p.m. for the giveaway. It also serves coffee from Brooklyn Roasting Company and food like egg sandwiches and salads.
