CROWN HEIGHTS — Neighbors scared off a man who tried to rape a woman in a stairwell of her apartment building early on Saturday morning — just minutes after he groped another woman nearby, police said.

The man followed the 30-year-old woman, whose name was not released, into her building just after 1 a.m. Saturday, and followed her up several flights of stairs in her apartment building near Rogers Avenue and Union Street, according to surveillance video released by police.

The suspect tried to talk to the victim before attacking her, police said.

Footage shows him striking and struggling with the woman whose screams alerted neighbors and sent the would-be rapist running back down the stairs, police said.

Moments before the stairwell attack, police said the suspect groped another woman, whose name and age were not released, on the street near Bedford Avenue and President Street, police said.

The suspect was described as being in his 20s, about 5’ 9” tall and 130 pounds. At the time of the assaults, he was wearing a white T-shirt and blue jeans.

Anyone with information should contact Crime Stoppers at (800) 577-TIPS (8477).
