TOTTENVILLE — The championship winning Tottenville High School girls softball team is about to get a  $1.9 million field, Borough President James Oddo announced on Monday.

Construction of the new home of the Tottenville Pirates Softball Team, which has won nine PSAL Championships in the past 12 years, will start in the fall, Oddo said.

"If you believe that youth sports produce off field life lessons, and I certainly do, then the facilities where these games play need the investments worthy of the kids playing there, Oddo said.

"We’re making an investment in the young student athletes at Tottenville High School and in effect making an investment in Staten Island's tomorrow."

Oddo, a known baseball fanatic, broke the news to the team at a meet-and-greet at Borough Hall where he talked about their winning season followed by a wiffle ball game with them.

The field was funded by a $500,000 allocation each from Oddo and Councilman Vincent Ignizio, with an additional $900,000 from the Schools Construction Authority.

The field is expected to be ready by September 2015, Oddo said.
