ELMHURST — An annual tribute concert for a legendary Hong Kong band will be held this weekend at a local metal club.

The Echo Music Festival Open Jam is the first of two tribute shows to the band Beyond, which formed in 1983.

"This show is paying a tribute to one of the most influential bands in Hong Kong," said organizer Steven Lin, 35.

The annual tradition is popular in Hong Kong, Malaysia, Taiwan and elsewhere in Asia, and Lin started hosting his own shows for the band last year.

The first show, at Blackthorn 51, is a sort of "audition" show for musicians, Lin said.

A lot of the bands are "students, or working and haven't picked up the guitar all year," he said. "But they gather together and pay tribute to their idols and play songs that they love."

Performers from Sunday's show have the chance to be selected to play the final tribute show at Santos' Party House in Tribeca on July 20.

The founder and lead singer of Beyond, Wong Ka-kui, died in 1993 while filming a TV show in Tokyo. The band stayed together but broke up in 2005.

Doors open for the Open Jam at 6 p.m. at Blackthorn 51, 80-12 51st Ave. Tickets are $10 for general admission, and a $20 ticket includes a barbecue.
