CHINATOWN — A funeral and memorial service will be held this weekend for Wen Hui Ruan, the 68-year-old man beaten to death on East Sixth Street, his family said Tuesday.

A memorial service will take place from 3 to 7 p.m. on May 31 at Ng Fook Funeral Services, 36 Mulberry St. Funeral rites will occur the next day from 9 to 10 a.m. at the same location.

The services are open to “anyone that would like to attend,” according to an email from Ruan’s daughter, Amy Ruan.

Ruan was attacked after 20-year-old Jamie Pugh confronted him at about 8:45 p.m. May 9 on East Sixth Street near Avenue D, police said. Pugh instructed Ruan to “gimme something” before throwing against a wall and then stomping and kicking him, police said. Ruan died of his injuries the next day.

Pugh was charged with murder, assault and robbery.

The incident shocked members of the community, who gathered at a memorial on May 19 to honor Ruan's life and take a stand against the violence.

Residents have donated more than $5,700 through an online fundraiser to help Ruan’s family with the funeral and other expenses.
