MANHATTAN — A teenager tried to rob a Madison Avenue cellphone store at gunpoint, but fled empty-handed when he couldn't open any of the cases the valuable electronics were in, police said.

The suspect, photos of whom were released by police, first asked a clerk at BC Wireless, 218 Madison Ave., how much iPhones cost, but then drew his gun and demanded the clerk drop to the floor about 3 p.m. Wednesday, the NYPD said.

The suspect, who's believed to be in his late teens, then got behind the counter and tried to open the display cases containing the phones, but failed and ended up running away with nothing, police said.

The would-be thief was last seen wearing a black hoodie and sporting dreadlocks, according to surveillance photos released by police.

Anyone with information should contact Crime Stoppers at (800) 577-TIPS (8477).
