RED HOOK — The neighborhood’s annual free summer movie festival is returning with a pre-series fundraiser.

Red Hook Flicks, which started in 2006, will hold a fundraiser on Sunday and then will kick off on July 8, offering movies every Tuesday night for eight weeks at Valentino Pier.

“This is one of the benefits of living in Red Hook,” said Denise Oswald, one of the event’s organizers, of the movies shown with views of the waterfront and the Statue of Liberty. “[Valentino Pier is] one of our signature locations.”

On Sunday, organizers will host a fundraiser and announce the summer’s slate of films at the Red Hook Bait and Tackle from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. There is a suggested donation of $10.

People will also get a chance to choose one film for the lineup at $1 per vote. Last year’s winner was "Don’t Tell Mom the Babysitter’s Dead."

Bars and restaurants like Pok Pok Ny, Home/Made, Hometown BBQ and the Red Hook Lobster Pound have sponsored previous screenings with food and drink and many are expected to return this year.

While the series initially began in collaboration with the city, it has since been organized and sponsored by local residents and businesses.

“It’s very classically Red Hook,” Oswald said. “It feels like a block party at the end of the day.”

The Red Hook Flicks fundraiser will take place on May 18 at Red Hook Bait and Tackle, at 320 Vant Brunt St. from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. For more information, visit this website.
