Abramson, 60, was appointed to the position in 2011 and was the first woman to serve as the head of the paper's newsroom. She will be replaced by managing editor Dean Baquet, according to the Times.
“I’ve loved my run at The Times,” Abramson said in a statement. “I got to work with the best journalists in the world doing so much stand-up journalism.”
A picture tweeted by reporter David Gelles shows reporters and editors standing shoulder to shoulder while the announcement was made.
"Stunned newsroom," the tweet reads.
