MANHATTAN — Three people were hurt when a fire tore through an apartment in a 20-story Lower East Side complex overlooking the East River Thursday morning, an FDNY spokesman said.

The flames erupted about 1:20 a.m. in a third-floor apartment at 575 Grand St.,  which is part of the East River Housing Corporation, a four-building housing cooperative near the FDR Drive, according to the FDNY.

Three people were hurt in the fire but were treated at the scene and did not need to be taken to a hospital, FDNY officials said.

The nearly 80 firefighters who responded to the fire struggled to extinguish it because of excess debris in the apartment, fire officials said. It was deemed under control at about 2 a.m.

Fire marshals are working to determine what caused the fire.
