RED HOOK — Cyclists could soon have a reason to ride to Red Hook as the neighborhood’s first bike corral is proposed for Van Brunt Street.

The city’s Department of Transportation will present a proposal on Thursday for the bike parking rack in front of Fort Defiance, a popular neighborhood bar at 365 Van Brunt St.

A DOT spokesman would not comment on details of the parking structure, but bike corrals can hold several cycles and are installed in the curbside lane of the street instead of on a sidewalk, according to the DOT website.

Brooklyn currently has 11 bike corrals throughout the borough. While Red Hook has a number of bike racks on the sidewalk, this would be the neighborhood’s first corral.

Fort Defiance did not respond to requests for comment.

DOT’s proposal will be presented at Community Board 6’s transportation and public safety meeting on March 20 at 6:30 p.m. at the 78th Precinct (65 Sixth Ave.)
