CHELSEA — L'Wren Scott, renowned fashion designer and longtime girlfriend of Mick Jagger, hanged herself with a scarf in her apartment Monday morning, sources said.
EMS responders were called to 200 11th Ave. at 10 a.m. and found Scott, 49, in cardiac arrest, an FDNY spokesman said. She could not be revived.
Sources said that she texted her assistant at 8:30 a.m. and told her to come to Scott's apartment. When the woman arrived she discovered the 6-foot-4-inch former model hanging from a doorknob with a scarf around her neck.
No note was found, sources said.
Her family could not be reached for comment, but a spokesman put out a statement.
"We confirm the tragic death of L'Wren Scott," spokesman Daniel Urrutia said. "At this devastating time for Ms. Scott's family and friends, we request that their privacy be respected."
Jagger is "completely shocked and devastated," his spokesman told the BBC.
The Rolling Stones lead singer is traveling in Australia, according to his Twitter feed.
Scott, who grew up in a small town in Utah, began modeling as soon as she graduated high school.
After her modeling career ended she became a highly sought after stylist in Los Angeles.
Scott was also a Hollywood costumer designer on "Ocean's Thirteen," "Diabolique" and Martin Scorsese's recent Rolling Stones documentary "Shine the Light," according to IMDB.com
In February, she canceled the unveiling of a new fashion line, which she described as "feminine & glamorous with a bit of a rock and roll edge" because of production problems, Elle UK reported.
Business seemed to be on the decline for the designer.
LS Fashion Ltd, Scott's UK-based company, reported a $5.6 million loss in 2012, according to the Guardian.
After news of her death broke, fashion designers took to Twitter to express their grief over her death.
Rest in peace, L'Wren Scott. You'll forever be missed," Marc Jacobs wrote in his Twitter feed on Monday.
Police said their investigation is ongoing.
