UPPER EAST SIDE — Two police officers saved a 15-month old baby after she stopped breathing inside an Upper East Side apartment building over the weekend, officials said.
Officers Michael Konatsotis and David Roussine responded to a call of an unconscious baby at 207 E. 74th St. just after 2 p.m. on Saturday, the NYPD said. When the officers arrived, they found the father cradling the unresponsive baby in his arms outside the building, police said.
Konatsotis, a former EMT and a 17-year veteran of the force, checked the child's vital signs and determined she wasn't breathing, the NYPD said. He immediately performed mouth-to-mouth resuscitation in the front passenger seat of the police car while Officer Roussine drove the group to the hospital, police said.
Konatsotis was able to resuscitate the baby before the car arrived at Weill-Cornell Medical Center, where he brought the child to the emergency room, police added.
The little girl is now in stable condition, officials said.
Konatsotis, 45, and Roussine, 25, are both officers of the 30th Precinct, which covers West Harlem and Hamilton Heights. They were assigned to patrol the Upper East Side on Saturday, the NYPD said.
