BENSONHURST — A 38-year-old Brooklyn man died in a fire that broke out in his building early Saturday morning, according to police.

Law enforcement officials responded to a 911 call just after midnight Saturday about a fire that broke out on the third floor of a building on 73rd Street between 17th and 18th Avenues.

Fire Department officials extinguished the fire after arriving at the scene, according to police.

Upon entering the building, officers found the victim, Joseph Barbara, unresponsive and unconscious. He was pronounced dead at the scene by EMS responders, according to police.

The medical examiner has yet to determine the exact cause of death, and the fire department is continuing to investigate the blaze.
