WEST BRIGHTON — A woman who tried to steal a bag from an elderly victim in West Brighton got away by hitching a ride with a passing car — then robbed the driver, police said.

The suspect approached an 80-year-old woman at the intersection of Broadway and Forest Avenue just after 3:30 p.m. on Feb. 10, police said.

She told the woman she had a gun, grabbed her bag and fled on foot. But a good Samaritan chased her and got the bag back, police said.

The suspect, who was in her 40s, then flagged down a passing car and got into it at Elizabeth Street and Forest Avenue, police said.

The driver of the car, a 62-year-old woman, took the suspect to Castleton Avenue and Elizabeth Street, where the suspect got out. The victim later realized the hitcher had taken her bag, police said.

Anyone with information is asked to call Crime Stoppers at (800) 577-TIPS (8477).
