PARK SLOPE — After a nearly two-year wait, the Mexican restaurant Calexico has opened its doors in Park Slope.
Taco-starved Park Slopers were finally sated on Friday night when the Vendy Award-winning taco truck announced on Twitter that the Fifth Avenue location was up and running at 278 Fifth Ave. near First Street.
Calexico, which has several brick and mortar locations, first announced plans to move into the site in May 2012. Calexico then unveiled an expansion into Queens and Long Island, while the Park Slope storefront remained dark.
The newly-opened restaurant doesn't have a liquor license yet, so diners won't be able to wash down their burritos with beers. But it's serving its full Southern California-inspired menu of tacos, quesadillas, enchiladas, sandwiches, salads and grits made with cheddar cheese and jalapeno peppers.
Sides include standards like chips and guacamole ($9), chicken wings with a chipotle glaze ($9), and a dish called carne fries ($12), described as "chile-cilantro fries with braised beef brisket, caramelized onions, black beans, cheese sauce, pico de gallo, sour cream and guacamole."
Hours of service will be 11:30 a.m. until 11 p.m. until the restaurant gets its full booze license, according to a sign in the window.
